This week in publishing (January 31 through February 6)

Here’s some of what’s happening in publishing right now:
From Catherine, Caffeinated: E-Books: The tipping point
“Ten months ago I uploaded Mousetrapped to Smashwords and what was then called Amazon’s Digital Text Platform (DTP) – now Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) – almost as an afterthought.
“I was looking for something to do while I waited for my Createspace proof copy to arrive.”
From Self-Publishing Review: Great tools for self-published authors
“In the past, I’ve posted here and there about the tools I use for my web design, marketing and audio projects and figured I’d bring them all together in one reference for others wanting to check them out. This is by no means a full list of all that is out there, just a list of what I’ve had success with. Some are free, some cost a minimal amount of dough. Overall, I know most self-published/indie authors are on a tight budget anyway, making it difficult to outsource some of the different jobs one has to do, so these tools will definitely come in handy if you’re a do-it-yourselfer like me.”
From Publishers Weekly: Borders faces delisting
“Borders said late Friday that it has been notified by the New York Stock Exchange that it is not in compliance with the requirement that a company’s stock trade for a minimum of $1 per share over a consecutive 30 day trading period. The chain’s stock closed at 39 cents on Friday. The company has six months to return to compliance or face delisting from the NYSE. During that period, Borders’ shares can be still be traded on the exchange, provided it meets all other requirements.”
From Kristen Eckstein: How to get your book into Barnes and Noble
“I get asked this question all the time. Unfortunately many authors who ask me this question have already published their books and if they weren’t published correctly I must tell them to cross Barnes & Noble off their list and focus on online sales. If you haven’t published your book yet, make sure you set it up right to meet the following Barnes & Noble guidelines…”
From the New York Times: E-readers catch younger eyes
“Something extraordinary happened after Eliana Litos received an e-reader for a Hanukkah gift in December.
“’Some weeks I completely forgot about TV,’ said Eliana, 11. ‘I went two weeks with only watching one show, or no shows at all. I was just reading every day.’”
From Mick Rooney: POD, Self-Publishing, and Independent Publishing: Self-Publishing Index, criteria explained
“I thought with the release of the February 2011 Self-Publishing Index that I would try and provide a little more detail behind how the Index is put together and what criteria is used. Each month, I publish a graphic spreadsheet showing the latest Index and how it has changed from the previous month.”
